Windows 10 Security Risks: The Business Case for Windows 11

For nearly a decade, Windows 10 has been the reliable workhorse of the global economy. It has powered our spreadsheets, connected our Zoom calls, and served as the stable foundation for business operations. But in the technology lifecycle, stability eventually gives way to obsolescence. On October 14, 2025, Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10. In this blog, we outline the risks of Windows 10 and share a few of the business advantages of Windows 11.

What EOL Means for your Business

When we say an operating system is reaching “End of Life,” (EOL), what we mean is that the invisible shield protecting those computers will vanish. “End of Support” means Microsoft will no longer provide:

  • Technical support for issues that arise.
  • Software updates to fix bugs.
  • Critical security patches for newly discovered vulnerabilities.

This third point is the one that keeps IT professionals like us up at night. Hackers and cybercriminal organizations track these dates religiously. They know that any new vulnerability discovered in Windows 10 will remain an open door forever. A business running Windows 10 in 2026 is effectively operating a bank vault with the door wide open.

The Three Pillars of Risk

Ignoring Windows 10 EOL introduces three specific categories of risk to your organization:

  1. Security and Ransomware

The modern threat landscape is ruthless. Ransomware gangs target unpatched vulnerabilities to enter networks. One compromised laptop can serve as a bridgehead for an attacker to encrypt your servers and demand a ransom. The cost of a breach, now over $2 million dwarfs the cost of upgrading your fleet.

  1. Compliance and Insurance

If you are in a regulated industry (healthcare, finance, legal), regulations like HIPAA, GDPR, or PCI-DSS essentially mandate that you use supported software. Running an EOL operating system is an immediate compliance violation that can lead to heavy fines.

Furthermore, consider your Cyber Liability Insurance. Most carriers now have strict clauses requiring businesses to maintain supported systems. If you suffer a breach on a Windows 10 machine, your insurer may have grounds to deny your claim entirely, leaving you to foot the bill for recovery.

  1. Operational Friction

Beyond security, there is the issue of compatibility. As Microsoft moves on, so do third-party vendors. The software you use daily, like Adobe, Salesforce, your accounting tools etc. will eventually stop optimizing.Clinging to the old OS will eventually result in a buggy, slow, and frustrating employee experience that drags down productivity.

The Windows 11 Advantage

The transition to Windows 11 isn’t merely a software update; for many organizations, it represents a significant operational shift that involves budgeting, hardware procurement, and security compliance. Windows 11 isn’t just a “reskin” of Windows 10; it is an OS built for the hybrid work era. Here’s what’s been improved:

  • Speed and Efficiency:  Windows 11 manages memory differently, prioritizing the active app windows you are working on. This results in a snappier feel, faster wake-from-sleep times, and better battery life management on laptops.
  • The Interface: While the centered Start menu gets all the attention, features like “Snap Layouts” allow employees to instantly organize multiple windows on a single screen, a massive productivity booster for anyone working on a laptop without external monitors.
  • Zero Trust Security: Because of those strict hardware requirements (TPM 2.0), Windows 11 is arguably the most secure OS Microsoft has ever released. It enables features like credential guarding and hypervisor-protected code integrity by default, making it much harder for malware to infect the deepest parts of the system.

Our goal as a Managed Service Provider is to ensure technology is an asset, not a liability. The end of Windows 10 is inevitable, but the stress associated with it is optional.
